  1. Yellow-crowned Night-Heron continues at Cabrillo Salt Marsh LINK
    DATE: Sep 27, 2018, 25 day(s) ago
The juvenile YCNH was at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh today (Sep 27). During
the time I observed from 3:34pm to 4:22pm, it was roosting in a tree.
Unusual visitors were 5 Brown-headed Cowbirds (1 adult female, 2
juveniles, 1 immature female, and 1 immature male with blotches of black
coming in), a female-type Cinnamon Teal, and a male Gadwall in
nonbreeding plumage. Also present in the salt marsh were 4
American Coots, 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 2 Killdeer, 2 juvenile
Black-crowned Night-Herons, a Great Blue Heron, 2 Snowy Egrets (with one
territorially chasing the other often, as usual), a Willet, the male
    Belted Kingfisher, a Say's Phoebe, 2 Black Phoebes, a Pacific-slope
    Flycatcher, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, an Orange-crowned Warbler, 2 House
Wrens, 2 Northern Mockingbirds, 10 American Crows, 2 Common Ravens, an
adult Western Gull, 2 California Towhees, and a House Finch. When one of
the Black-crowned Night-Herons finally came down to start hunting at
3:02pm, it started shooing away crows.

The YCNH was also at the salt marsh on Sep 23. Shortly after I
arrived (at 3:28pm), at 3:38pm it came out into view in a tree roost,
flew down to hide under the main walkway, then 3:46pm came down to the
marsh to start hunting. I continued to observe it until 4:24pm; during
most of that time it was hunting along the edge of the island (though I
did not see it catch anything).

On Sep 23 the Northern Fulmar apparently continued at the Cabrillo
    Fishing Pier
    according to
an eBird checklist , but every time I've checked from Sep 22 onward
    (Sep 22, 23, 26, and 27), it hasn't been there. However, on Sep 26, a
non-birder who is nevertheless interested in birds told me that the
Fulmar had been there the previous day, Sep 25 ; he did not know
its species name, but his description of its behavior and appearance was
a very good match, and when I showed him a picture, he confirmed that was
    the bird he had seen.

    In contrast to Jonathan Nakai's
    Sep 21 checklist
with 7 Semipalmated Plovers at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh, although there
were 4 Killdeer on Sep 22 and 5 Killdeer on Sep 23, there was only 1
Semipalmated Plover on those two days, and I've seen none since then (so
    far).

Although there was one Sanderling on the Cabrillo outer beach on Sep 16
at 1:01pm, so far this season I have not seen any besides that.

On Sep 22 the salt marsh had the unusual visitor of a Red-necked
Phalarope. It was present at 2:48pm, and stayed a long time, finally
flying away at 4:29pm. It spent a large proportion of that time foraging
on the mud, walking along and nipping at miniscule items, much like the
Spotted Sandpipers do at this location. It went to the water only for
rest, safety, or preening; unlike at most other locations where I've
observed phalaropes, it did not do any foraging on the water, though it
did gradually rotate most of the time it was on water. The only other
time I've seen a Red-necked (or any) Phalarope in the Cabrillo area was
May 23, 2011 (on the inner beach), and it was slightly oiled; this Sep 22
    phalarope, however, was immaculate.

    DATE: Sep 14, 2018 @ 1:20pm, 37 day(s) ago
The YCNH was at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh today (Sep 14) when I looked
inside at 12:35pm. It was perched directly below the right side of the
end of the narrow walkway, relaxing. Since it was a high tide, it's
    probably still there now.

    Tuesday (Sep 11) at 3:03pm, I
encountered a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) at the
Cabrillo Salt Marsh (Salinas de San Pedro), hunting on the mud (though
not catching anything). Also present were Black-crowned Night-Herons of
various ages, a Snowy Egret, a Great Blue Heron, a Spotted Sandpiper
    (later 4), a Least Sandpiper, a Willet, a Whimbrel, and a Belted
Kingfisher (male). The YCNH flew up into a tree at 3:21pm, and was still
there when I left at 3:29pm. Later I returned and the YCNH was still
there at 6:30pm, on the edge (boulders) of the salt marsh's island. I
could see that there were some crabs there, but the YCNH failed to catch
any. After a while it flew back to go hunting on the mud (unsucessfully),
and ended up coming extremely close to where I was standing. I quietly
moved my tripod to try to continue taking photos, and at 7:28pm the YCNH
suddenly flew away (I'm not sure if this was related to it suddenly
realizing I was so close when I moved, which it may not have seen right
away due to how dark it had become) and called three times.

Wednesday (Sep 12) the YCNH was back at the salt marsh, already present
when I arrived at 2:53pm. I watched as it rested and preened for a while,
then resumed hunting. After many failures, I actually got to see it catch
a crab on the rocks next to the salt marsh's main (wide) walkway.
Invigorated by this success, it went hunting on the mud for a while, but
repeatedly "caught" and dropped items it apparently realized
wouldn't be good to eat once they were in its bill. It was still hunting
in this way when I left at 5:03pm. (And an additional species present
    this day was Great Egret.)

Included are some comparison shots of a Black-crowned juvenile with the
Yellow-crowned juvenile, and some shots of the Yellow-crowned with the
crab it caught and ate. I hope you don't mind the large number (143) of
photos. They are all frame captures from 4K 60fps video.

Also quite remarkable is that on Sep 11 there were 400-500+ Elegant Terns
perching on the beach shores (420 on the Cabrillo Beach inner beach, and
later 160 on the Cabrillo Youth Camp beach) and doing some courtship and
fish offerings/displays, despite being in nonbreeding plumage now I
don't think I've ever seen that at this time of year. With them were
60-70 Black Skimmers (BLSK). On Sep 12 there were even more BLSK 90 of
them. On both days, one of these BLSK was a begging juvenile, and on Sep
11 it was fed by a parent at least once (though when I saw this happen,
after lots of begging, the juvenile ended up not even liking the fish
enough to swallow it, and dropped it. A Western Gull grabbed it, and ran
over to the shore with it to wet it, but then decided that it really
wasn't good enough to eat after all and left it in the water.) I think
this is the first time I've ever seen a juvenile BLSK get fed at
Cabrillo. (Of the 90 BLSK on Sep 12, besides the begging juvenile, 6
others were immature but apparently too old to be begging, and the
remaining 83 were adult. The ratio on Sep 11 was similar.)

And, since Sep 8, there has been a Ruddy Turnstone on the outer beach
along with Marbled Godwits (6 at first, but soon increased to 8). The
turnstone sticks very close to the godwits most of the time, often
foraging almost directly underneath them. In Sep 2016, the same thing had
happened (but with fewer godwits); I wonder if it's the same Ruddy
Turnstone individual. Neither the godwits nor turnstone ever seem to be
annoyed at each other. It might be a mutually beneficial arrangement. I
think the turnstone probably benefits from the godwits finding productive
feeding spots, and from the godwits being better at spotting potential
predators due to their increased height and number. It's possible the
godwits benefit from the turnstone shoving aside clumps of kelp and
exposing the potential prey items underneath. (Note, there have been no
Black Turnstones in this particular stretch of beach, and only the one
    Ruddy Turnstone.)

I was also surprised to see a Black-necked Stilt again on Sep 8, at the
same location as I previously reported one being in on Sep 2. This time,
it spent the vast majority of its time just resting, and during the
entire time I watched (5:49pm to 6:58pm) only started eating a little bit
(again what I think were flies, but this time from the wet sand not
anywhere close to kelp) towards the very end of that time period, when it
    was starting to get dark.

  7. American Oystercatcher continues LINK
    DATE: Sep 8, 2018 @ 2:59am, 44 day(s) ago
The juvenile AMOY was present on the big rock (33.7171N,118.3226W) at
Royal Palms Beach near the lifeguard station both on Thursday and Friday
(Sep 6-7) along with a bunch of BLOYs (Black Oystercatchers). I have
gotten the impression that it is most likely to be there during high
tide, and uses this location primarily as a roosting spot rather than
foraging (though it does a bit of that), and that the oystercatchers
    disperse for actual foraging.

On Sep 6, I watched the big rock from 13:25 to 14:00, seeing no sign of
the AMOY. At that point, two birders told me they had seen the AMOY 10
minutes earlier (so presumably at 13:50) further up the coast (west,
around 33.7188N,118.3250W) but then it flown further up the coast
(west). So, I start a long trek along the rocky shore, going all the way
to 33.72547N,118.34160W (1.1 miles; it felt longer than that due to the
lack of smooth walkways) before going up the switchback path. There were
TONS of Rock Wrens along that 1.1 mile stretch of rocky shore; I estimate
at least 12 (I took audio notes, due to carrying a tripod
and not having free hands to take keyboard-typed notes as I normally do,
so I won't be able to total up an exact count until transcribing the
audio notes) . (Also notable was seeing 23 Snowy Egrets, 8 Ravens,
and a Western Gull feeding together on a single stretch of kelp below the
aforementioned switchback path.) Then, I walked Ocean Trails for a while
(including checking out the lake) before heading back towards Royal Palms
Beach (staying at high elevation rather than going back along the beach).
I finally returned to the Royal Palms big rock at 17:51. The AMOY was
there when I arrived, along with 8 BLOY. All the oystercatchers flew away
    together at 18:40.

On Sep 7, the AMOY was already there (on the big rock) when I arrived at
15:45, along with at least 5 BLOY. It was there until 17:10, during which
both it and the BLOYs moved around a lot (on the big rock). It must have
flown away when I wasn't looking, because it returned (in flight) at
17:18. I looked away again, to adjust my tripod, and it was gone; it must
have flown away again. Also notable on this day was seeing 3 hatch-year
Heermann's Gulls (HEEG) on the big rock (amongst plenty more adults); I
think these may be the same individuals I sometimes see at Cabrillo
Beach, because I haven't seen the hatch-year HEEGs much at Cabrillo
    lately.

In other news: The Eurasian Collared-Doves have continued to gather on the wires
behind the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in the evenings, but I have not seen
a White-winged Dove again since my initial (Sep 2) report. A Yellow-fronted Canary (presumed escapee) sang in the palm tree at
33.70977N,118.28599W on Sep 5 from 17:53 to 18:02 then flew away. David Ellsworth

  9. Possible little blue heron LINK
    DATE: Aug 1, 2018 @ 8:55am, 3 month(s) ago
Possible little blue heron sighted on 7/31/18 about 11:00 am on the south channel at Ballona Creek around 200 yds upchannel from the Pacific St. bridge.

Snowy egret-like bird but with feet and legs of an even dull green color (not yellow-green, if anything a little on the blue side), no yellow observed on face, bicolored bill but this does not rule out immature snowy.

Viewed at about 100 yds (10x). Not a good enough sighting to justify rushing out to find it, but if you're in the area anyway worth keeping an eye out for.

  11. Third-cycle Heermann's Gull LINK
    DATE: Jul 7, 2018 @ 3:57pm, 4 month(s) ago
I arrived at ShoreLine Aquatic Park on bicycle at 4:54pm (July 4), at
which point the Guadalupe Murrelet was apparently already long gone
(later confirmed by reading Tom Miko's post). Of course I tried anyway,
but to no avail so I took enjoyment at what I could find, including 3
Brown Pelicans (BRPE), 3 Snowy Egrets, 1 Great Blue Heron and 1 juvenile
Black-crowned Night-Heron all perched on one boat. I noticed an instance
of mild BRPE aggression for the first time (in my previous experience
they've aways been total gentle giants for example letting Heermann's
Gulls follow them around like pets), in which an almost-adult raised its
wings and bobbed its head to let an adjacent younger BRPE know that it
felt annoyed by it (perhaps because that younger one had just suddenly
playfully chewed on part of the boat); the immature BRPE took the hint
and side-stepped 12+ feet away from it along the rail on which they were
all standing (which also caused a Snowy Egret also to have to scoot
    further along on it).

Then I decided to bird along the beach for a while (apparently called
Junipero Beach). First thing I noticed was that there's a lot more
Heermann's Gulls (HEEG) and California Gulls there now, compared to
Cabrillo Beach. A small number of the HEEGs were 2nd-cycle (just like at
Cabrillo), but mostly they were adult in breeding plumage (with a very
small number just beginning to molt into nonbreeding plumage).

Most interestingly, a third of a mile short of (WNW of) Belmost Pier, at
33.75979N,118.15341W, was a 3rd-cycle (two year old) HEEG. Well, 2016
was the year HEEGs had an extremely unsuccessful breeding season, and
nobody (as far as I know) found any juvenile HEEGs. And now one has shown
up that must have hatched on that year.

(Bicycling back home on July 4 evening without having
brought any earplugs turned out to be a very bad idea, given that I'm
trying very hard to preserve the hearing I still have left. But I did get
home just in time to video the entire official Cabrillo Beach
    fireworks show.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong and this is just an adult with a
    way-off-track molting schedule. But I am pretty sure it's a 3rd-cycle
    bird.

Also, did anyone end up finding any hatch-year HEEGs in 2016 I certainly
    did not.

And has anyone else found 3rd-cycle HEEGs this year This is my
    first.

  25. ABC Update: 238 species LINK
    DATE: Apr 28, 2018 @ 11:46am, 6 month(s) ago
    All,

More species have come in, some of them gleaned from eBird:

    Marbled Godwit

     Dunlin

     Gray Flycatcher Purple Martin

Bob's Gap: group of three Brewer's sparrow

The purple martins will trip the "rare bird" filter in eBird so we will need good documentation.

To date, I know of two observers who have searched Bob's Gap for the gray vireo but nobody has found it yet.

Here again is our updated list of everything we've FOUND:
