  3. Stolen bird skins, Bonelli Wilson's Phalarope, Brown Pelicans and a gray Tringa LINK

Sunday 7/12/2018 17:57 Hi, Before I getto the
mystery Tringa at Bonelli, and I the only person who heard yesterday's "This American Life" If you like cranky ornithologists,Alfred Russell Wallace, England, tropical birds, fly fishing, or Renaissance music, you've got to listen to this episode (I can't
figure out how to listen to the whole episode, instead of the segments):

Scott and I went to Bonelli mid-day, and sweated while looking for the four Brown Pelicans sitting on the north shore. For the non eBirders, they have been there on-and-off since () Friday. We made sure that we got them
by staring out the car window while cruising eastbound on Puddingstone Drive. Then we parked at the far east end at the dirt parking lot (free), and walked in. From the RV Park we saw several interesting sandpipers, but we didn't have a scope, so I took photos,
assuming thatI would be able to identify them on a computer screen (Take that, you teenagers with your cell phones!). When I got home, I fell asleep on the lazy boy, so just now I realized while processing the photos that (slap to the forehead) the white
sandpiper was a Wilson's Phalarope. Doh! There was a definiteGreater Yellowlegs close to us, and I called the other gray Tringa off in the distance a Lesser Yellowlegs, but I would like second and third opinions on it. It is in the same frame in two pictures
    of the Wilson's Phalarope:

    Birders,

    Friday 20 July

This morning there were at least four Wilson's Phalaropes at LAR north of Willow St, spending most of their time north of the pipe bridge. One of the birds was an early juvenile (see photos).

  11. Malibu Lagoon LINK
    DATE: Jul 2, 2018 @ 8:07pm, 46 day(s) ago
This morning Bonnie Flamer and I found a female Wilson's Phalarope, 3 Whimbrels, several Snowy Plovers and Least Terns at the Malibu Lagoon about 8:30 AM (just about 1.5 hours after maximum low tide of the morning). Western, Herrmann's and California Gulls were present but the only other Tern was a single adult Elegant. Of the +/- 15 Herrmann's Gulls, only one was an immature- first cycle bird. .Good birding!

There's still at least one birdathon team that has yet to report, and more species could appear in eBird from people who don't subscribe to the listserves, so our total could grow.

Common Tern (black outer web of outer rectrices easy to see, hard to photograph in flight)among the multiple Forster’s Terns at Puddingstone Reservoir/Bonelli Regional Park, around 5:30 p.m.Good looks at it, but no photos. I scanned
all over the reservoir for the Neotropic Cormorant, but no. There was afemale Purple Martin at the weedy, scrubby patch of trees between the jungle trail and the grove of tall eucalyptus at the far eastern of the north shore parking. The eucalypti there
were hopping with warblers, and a Lawrence’s Goldfinch.

Some of the missing pelagic species were seen today from a boat, but unfortunately we can't count them.

Attempts to find American dippers on the Barrett-Stoddard Road creek and on the West Fork of the San Gabriel River came up empty. There was also a search at Hidden Springs off Angeles Forest Highway yesterday. That species is proving to be more difficult
    than usual this year.

Here are species reported recently that we've never gotten before (and don't have yet this weekend):

Attempts to find American dippers on the Barrett-Stoddard Road creek and on the West Fork of the San Gabriel River came up empty. There was also a search at Hidden Springs off Angeles Forest Highway yesterday. That species is proving to be more difficult than usual this year.
